California Baptist rapped out 17 hits and scored seven runs over the final three innings to cruise by The Master’s College 11-4 Thursday afternoon on Reese Field.

The loss was the Mustangs’ second in as many days to the Lancers and the club’s seventh in their past eight outings. The Mustangs are now 6-12 in GSAC play and 12-16 overall.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Lancers jumped on Mustang starter Joe Zeller for three runs on three hits in the second, highlighted by a Kory Sepulveda two-run homer. An inning later, they laced three more hits and added another run for a 4-0 lead.

Zeller blanked the Lancers through the middle frames but his teammates did no better. In fact, Cal Baptist starter Drew Madrigal zeroed out the Mustangs through the first six innings.

The Lancers posted two more runs in the top of the seventh inning before the Mustangs finally broke through in the bottom of the frame. Jared Otto drove in courtesy runner Shane Murphy on a grounder to first base and Steve Vranau made it a 6-2 game when his double to left-center field plated Caleb Mintz.

But, the Lancers retaliated in the top of the eighth, scoring three more runs to grab a seven-run advantage. Four hits and an error led to the Lancers’ outburst.

The Mustangs bit into the 9-2 lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice. With two outs, Zeller and Mintz stroked singles, and Otto walked to load the bases. Vranau followed with a single to left field, scoring both Zeller and Mintz, but the Mustangs stranded two and left the inning trailing 9-4.

The Lancers capped off their late-inning runfest with two more runs in the top of the ninth, scoring on a double and a single. The Mustangs offered no resistance in their final at-bat, going down in order.

For the second day in a row, the Mustangs were outhit, this time by a 17-7 count. Vranau led the Mustangs with two hits and his second straight three-rbi performance. Goeman and Zeller also had two hits.

Zeller fell to 3-5 after surrendering six of the Lancer runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work.

Down 2-0 in the four-game series with Lancers, the Mustangs travel to Riverside on Saturday for a doubleheader with Cal Baptist.
