Drew Madrigal’s two-out single in the top of the eighth inning scored Matt Marnati with the go-ahead run and California Baptist went on to beat The Master’s College 7-6 Wednesday afternoon in Santa Clarita. It was the seventh one-run loss for the Mustangs in 2010 and dropped them to 6-11 in GSAC play and 12-15 overall.
Marnati had led off the inning with a base hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a flyout and trotted home on Madrigal’s single through the right side. The run made a loser out of Mustang reliever Jacob Miranda (1-1).
Miranda had relieved starter David Goodenough who was nearly unhittable through the first three innings before the Lancers unloaded on him for six runs over a four-inning span. Goodenough was matched through the first three frames by his Lancer counterpart, Taylor Siemens.
Both clubs snapped the respective shutouts in the fourth inning as the Lancers sandwiched a pair of singles around a stolen base and a flyout to go up 1-0. But, in the bottom of the inning, the Mustangs knotted the score with a two-out rally. Jared Otto started it with an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Steve Vranau’s single to center field.
The Lancers unlocked the tie in the top of fifth when Sharif Othman swatted a two-run homer off Goodenough.
That 3-1 advantage lasted until the bottom of the fifth when the Mustangs also used the long ball en route to three runs and their only lead of the game. With one out, Joe Zeller walked, raced to third on Caleb Mintz’ double to left field, and scored on Otto’s groundout. Then Vranau stepped to the plate and promptly blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence for a 4-3 lead.
But, that one-run margin lasted all of half an inning as the Lancers answered with a three-run frame of their own to go up 6-4 in the seventh.
However, just as quickly, the momentum shifted back to the Mustangs who put together a trio of extra-base hits to tie things up again in the bottom of the inning. Nick Jorgensen laced a leadoff double to left-center and moved to third on Parker Price’s sacrifice bunt. He wasn’t there long as Pete Goeman lined a run-scoring triple to center field, narrowing the deficit to 6-5.
An out later, Zeller walked again and then Mintz cracked his second double of the game, bringing home Goeman with the tying run. But, the Mustangs couldn’t get the big tie-breaking hit and had to settle for a 6-6 tie. That set things up for Madrigal in the top of the eighth.
The Mustangs, who were outhit 11-8, were led by Mintz, Otto, and Vranau with two hits apiece.
It will be a quick turnaround for both clubs as they play again on Thursday afternoon on Reese Field. The first pitch is set for 3:00pm.
